Library Digital Collections

The University library has significant holdings relating to the early development of printing in Europe. Our collection of over 4000 incunables (books printed with movable metal type before 1501) encompasses the earliest examples of printing including Johann Gutenberg in Mainz and William Caxton at Westminster among others.

The collection also features a large number of block books (‘xylographica’) and prints. These are short books printed from wooden blocks on which the text and illustration for each page is cut by hand.
