Description:
Koran. Lavishly illuminated manuscript of the Koran (or Qur'an) made in late fourteenth century Egypt. The Koran measures 876 mm x 592 mm with 470 leaves of enormously thick paper – the manuscript weighs 52kg. The calligraphy is also significant, being a very large and beautiful Muhaqquq script. The first three pages are entirely written in gold letters and all the chapter (sura) headings are illuminated. A number of folios are missing from the end of the manuscript. These, and a number of smaller lacunae and corrections, are noted in Mingana's Catalogue of Arabic Manuscripts. The manuscript was rebound in the 1890s in its original boards.
