Description:
Late 18th century, colour fantasy map first published anonymously by Joseph Johnson in 1772 but attributable Anna Letitia Barbauld's poem ‘To Mr. Barbauld, with a Map of the Land of Matrimony’. "A New Map of the Land of Matrimony, Drawn from the Latest Surveys" is a "romance cartography", a view on the matter of love and marriage. The cartouche of Barbauld’s map incorporates a blind cupid and the motto ‘Un aveugle fait le choix’ (‘A blind man makes the choice’).
