Description:
Wiltshire. Monochrome with ornate border, the map is very rich in detail including cities, place names, rivers and mountains. Castles, mountains and significant buildings are illustrated by drawings. Inset top left is a map of 'Salesbury' with a key to significant features and a small sketch of the 'Counsel House'. Beneath this are illustrated the arms of the Earls of Wiltshire and Salisbury: William Scrope, Patrik Fitzwater, William Longspey, Samuel Butler, Henry Lacye, John Stafford, Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, John and Henry Stafford, William Montagute, Richard Neuil, Thomas Bollen, George Duke of Clarence, William Paulet and Robert Cicill. Top right is an illustration of Stonehenge with a lengthy paragraph describing its erection by 'Ambrosius, King of the Brittaines' in 475. Around this are the name of ancient kings burried at Stonehenge. Bottom right is a compass rose and a scale of 'English miles'. The inscription reads: 'Performed by John Speed And are to be sold in Popes Head Alley against the Exchange by John Sudbury and G Humble. Cum Privilegio'.
