Description:
Huntington. Hand coloured map with letters around the edge acting as 'letters of reference' which relate to the index at bottom right. The map is very rich in detail including cities, place names, rivers and mountains. Castles, mountains and significant buildings are illustrated by drawings. Boundaries are denoted by coloured lines. Top left is a large ornate cartouche shaped like a milestone containing the title and the words: 'By Eman. Bowen, Geogr. to his Majesty'. This is illustrated with figures digging turf from the land. Top right an ornate cartouche contains the dedication: 'To the most Noble Robert Montagu Duke of Manchester, Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of the County of Huntington, and one of the Gentlemen of His Majesty's Bedchamber: this map is dedicated by His Grace's most obedt. Humble servt. Eman Bowen. Around the map are paragraphs giving statistical and historical data about the area. Bottom right a large table gives an 'Index Villaris' which lists places, their deaneries, letters of reference and Lords of the Manor. There is a key at the bottom explaining map symbols used, and two scale bars showing 'Geographic miles 60 to a Degree' and 'English Statute miles 69 to a Degree'. Printed along the bottom is: 'London. Printed for R Wilkinson 58 Cornhill. Laurie & Whittle 53 Fleet Street and Bowles & Carver 69 St Pauls Churchyard'.
