Autograph letter from Hugo to Sainte-Beuve asking him to send the three volumes of the Conservateur littéraire to Renduel, the publisher, who wants Hugo to publish a collection of his articles from journals and extracts from notebooks in one or two volumes to be entitled either 'Littérature mélée' or 'Littérature et philosophie mélées'. Hugo is anxious to know Sainte-Beuve's opinion of this proposition, and informs him that he is sending him the album of Louise Bertin.
At the end is a note in English in another hand: "This is the handwriting of Victor Hugo given to me by his intimate friend Ste Beuve. A. Hayward."
Sainte-Beuve was the most famous literary critic of the century. At first friend of Hugo, he had an affair with his wife in the 1830s and then often severely criticised his works.
Bought from Saffroy on 25 October 1965 for 380 francs.
