Description:
This book gathers 37 letters from Hugo to Parfait, all written during the exile. Most of them were sent from Jersey to Brussels, where Parfait was also in exile.
The letters mostly deal with Hugo's publications and political matters. The last one was written in 1861 at Waterloo, where Hugo travelled to find inspiration for a chapter telling the battle in Les Misérables, published the following year.
Bought from Loliée on 2 January 1964 for 7.500 francs.
Parfait started his career as a journalist, working notably for La Presse and writing pamphlets against the July Monarchy. Radical Republican, he was elected deputy in 1849. He went into exile in Belgium, where he rejoined Alexandre Dumas - who employed him as a secretary. He also visited several times Hugo in Guernsey and became one of his best friends. He returned to France in 1859 and waited until the beginning of the Third Republic to run for elections again; he was then elected deputy without interruption between 1871 and 1893.
