This autograph letter to Bertin is in two parts. The first one was written by Léopoldine Hugo (9 years old at the time), the second one by Victor Hugo.
Léopoldine gives childish news of the family. Hugo expresses his boredom of Paris during summer. He adds that he is looking for some unpublished works in his archives after his editor Renduel had asked him to release a compilation [Littérature et philosophie mélées, 1834]. Once he has finished this task, he announces that he will work with François-Antoine Harel on his play Marie Tudor [on stage in November 1834].
Bought from Loliée on 9 October 1964 for 800 francs.
Daughter of Louis Bertin, famous editor of the Journal des Débats, Louise Bertin was a musician and a writer; she notably wrote the opera La Esmeralda after Hugo's Hunchback of Notre-Dame in 1836. She was the tutor of Léopoldine and Hugo's friend.
