Description:
Anonymous work. Attributed by the British Library to Martin Luther, but more recently attributed to Philipp Melanchthon by Halkett and Laing. Scenes depicted in 26 woodcut illustrations by Lucas Cranch on opposite pages from the life of Christ parodied in contrast to the Pope's life and government. The latter are followed by quotations from the canon law, the former by quotations chosen chiefly from the Gospels. The selection of these quotations was presumably begun by Luther and continued by Melanchthon assisted by Schwertfeger; see Luther. Werke. Kritische Gesammtausgabe, v. 9 (1893), p. 689-690. Title within ornamental woodcut border. Signatures: A-B⁴, C⁶. Monogram stamp of Otto Schäfer (1912-2000) at head of rear paste-down. Twentieth-century binding reusing an early fifteenth-century leaf from a Vita St. Bernardi manuscript.
