Description:
The Tabley House Lute Book is a collection of solo lute pieces with a small number of pieces for guitar. The manuscript was perhaps copied in Cheshire c. 1660-70 and includes French and English pieces by E.Gautier, D. Gautier, Dufaut, Mecure, Pinel, Vincent, Confais, Warner and Hubert amongst other anonymous common tunes. The book is finished with a gold-tooled motif and the initials 'F' and 'D' in the centre of the board. There is a border composing of two blind-tooled lines and one gold-tooled line: a gold-tooled motif has been placed at the corners where these lines intersect. The cords that attach the board have failed; only the covering leather is attaching the board to the paper book block.
