Description:
Christmas 1905 edition of Yggdrasill magazine; created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated Christmas cover is a beautiful pen and ink drawing of stylised foliation and flowers all in black and white. The names of the Editors appear at the bottom of the cover: Gladys Llewellyn & Sallie Matthias. The Editorial notes that the cover is also the work of S. Matthias. The frontispiece illustration on the verso of folio one is a photographic portrait of Miss H.D. Oakeley, the new Warden of the House (an inserted note reads: Oct 1905 – Miss H.D. Oakeley, Warden of Royal Victoria College, McGill University, Montreal). Opposite on folio two is 'Aberystwyth Letter' penned by H.M. Stephen (previously Warden of the House) from Aberystwyth to the current Ashburnians. The account includes news of the sad demise of Miss Stephen's dog, Thistle. A small thumbnail photograph of Thistle appears as an illustration along with a number colour postcards of Aberystwyth. On folio four is a contribution titled 'Michaelmas Term 1905' by H.D. Oakeley. This is followed on folio seven by a poem 'The Maid's Awakening'. On the verso of folio seven is an article 'For History Students' which concludes with two tipped in pen and ink illustrations. Directly opposite is a 'Letter from Alexandra Hall to the Yggdrasill' which runs until folio twelve. This is followed by a poem 'The Bells' which has also been illustrated with pen and ink drawings of bells. Underneath this on folio thirteen is a short piece entitled 'Textual Criticism' which is followed by a short poem 'A Lament'. Next is the standing item 'Athletic Notes' on folio fourteen. Folio fifteen is blank but the Editorial appears on the verso. The Editorial welcomes a new Warden to the House, Miss Oakeley and Sub-Warden Miss Parkin. The departure of Miss Stephens, Miss Kempson and Miss Wilson are also noted. A good number of new students are also welcomed this term and are encouraged to contribute to the next edition. A complaint is made once again at 'slackness' in the contributions to Yggdrasill which is not 'half as good as it might be'. It is further relayed that 'all the work devolves [on these] two or three people', in fact, one contributor penned two items in one evening as well as making a dress. The magazine concludes with a list of the present students on folio sixteen.
