Description:
Summer 1903 edition of Yggdrasill magazine; created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated cover is a drawing coloured with watercolour paint. The magazine title and date June 1903 appears surrounded by red poppies. The frontispiece is a photograph of the Ashburnians with Thistle (Ashburne Hall dog). Opposite this on the first folio is a note that the Editor for session 1903-04 is V. Adams, and the Sub-Editor is A. Farmer. The Editorial notes begin on folio two commenting that the photograph is of the current Ashburnians but is not a complete gathering of the students in attendance. The notes further explain that the intention had been to have the permanent cover for Yggdrasill in place for this summer edition. Although this was not possible, the artwork is in progress, as is work on a Coat of Arms. There is once again a call for contributors to the magazine from the Ashburnians and a final plea not to remove the existing magazines from the common room without permission as they are becoming 'soiled and stained'. The articles begin on folio three with the 'Chronicle' update. This section closes with notes on departing and current students, as well as prize-winners, medallists and details of examination results. An article 'A Visit to a Coal Mine' on the verso of folio five is an account of a trip to a Lancashire coal mine. This is followed on folio seven by 'Sid Hamet' and 'A Criticism of Lamartine', the latter closing on folio eleven. Also on folio eleven is a poem entitled 'The Fancy-dress Ball' under which appears a photograph of a castle on a coastline. The following piece on folio twelve is an account of 'Mr Yeats' Lecture & Miss Farr's Recital with a little about Mr Yeats' Poems' by Bessie Harrison. A photograph of the common room with two seated students appears under the account, on the verso of folio thirteen. There is then a description of the 'Ashburne House Picnic' on folio fourteen which has been illustrated with two small photographs. This is followed on folio fifteen by a short story 'The Origin of the Examination'. The regular update 'Athletic News' is covered on folio eighteen by B. Harrison and the edition concludes with another small photograph of the grounds.
