Description:
Spring 1903 edition of Yggdrasill magazine; created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated cover is a pen and ink drawing. Two female students are depicted, one holding a quill pen with the magazine title underneath. At the bottom of the cover is an illustration of a tree. The frontispiece is a photograph of Elizabeth Parker with a cap and dressed in an academic gown. On folio two there is a table of contents and the Editorial notes. The notes begin with the photograph of Elizabeth Parker, included as the 'enthusiastic originator & first editor of Yggdrasill'. It goes on to explain that Miss Parker was one of the first students resident in the Hall when it was founded in 1900 and graduated in English Literature in 1901. The notes detail one or two new contributors to the magazine but further encourage submission by other Ashburnians. On the reverse of folio two is the 'Chronicle' which concludes with a little pen and ink drawing of a game of hockey. The short story 'An Interesting Visitor' is on folio four. This is followed by a poem on the verso of folio six 'Nil Desperandum' or 'The Triumph of the Ashburnians' which depicts a hockey victory over the Owens Second team. The victory is also recorded in the 'Athletic Notes' on folio seven. The composition 'Table Talk' is next beginning on folio eight followed by 'Le Printemps' on folio nine. The poem 'A Moral Squint' is on folio ten. A lengthy article entitled 'Tchaikowsky' [Tchaikovsky], fragments of a lecture by Dr Brodsky, begins on folio eleven. It is signed V. Joy. Correspondence to the Editor follows this article from the verso of folio fourteen, and is a letter from Ada Marshall. Underneath this is a note on the Ashburne Coat of Arms which has been under discussion. The edition finishes on folio seventeen verso with a poem entitled 'The Ploughman' instead of the usual Editorial.
