Description:
In 1915 Gaster published his work Romanian Bird and Beast Stories (381pp), consisting of a lengthy study in which he presents his views on folklore, followed by his translations of 119 numbered Romanian stories about animals, and three appendices (animal charms, stories from Ahikar, and animal stories from the Hebrew Alphabet of Ben Sira). Gaster found the stories in the published works of several Romanian folklorists, most notably (around two thirds of the stories) from two publications by Simion Florea Marian (1883 and 1903). R148858 is Gaster's own interleaved copy. It shows that he continued to gather and translate animal stories until shortly before his death. The volume contains handwritten notes (mostly references to what Gaster perceived as 'parallels' in various publications), a copy of a letter from Queen Elisabeth of Romania, news paper cuttings with reviews of the book, and inserted leaves with handwritten and typed stories. Below his translation of a story, Gaster usually mentions where he found it (not all references are correct) and when he translated it. These 9 pages are loose and inserted before the contents page. They include 3 typed stories, translated from an unidentified book by Pauline Schullerus. The stories are typed in red ink and corrections have been written by hand in black pencil. The first three pages are double spaced the remainder are single spaced. Pages 1-6 are 'Mistress cat' a story in which a cat having drunk the milk has to leave home, picking up lots of other animals along the way she arrives at the empty house of some robbers. The animals take up residence and manage to scare off the robbers when they return. The animals live happily in peace and health thereafter in the house. At the end is typed: 'Pauline Schullerus p 422, Friday 26 & Sunday 28 May 1933'. Pages 7-8 are 'The wolf and two little goats', in which a mother goat tricks the wolf that has eaten her children and manages to get her children back. At the end is typed: 'P Schullerus p.493/494, Friday 26.5.33'. The final page is 'The wolf and the pair of shoes' in which a man tricks a wolf that would have eaten him by offering him a pair of shoes and then setting his dogs on him. At the end is typed: 'Pauline Schullerus p.493, Friday 26.5.33'.
