Letter from A.P Wadsworth to Dr Guppy providing a brief background to the Manuscript. The collection of papers that now constitutes English Manuscript 1197 consists of letters, papers and other records, including original placards and notices, in respect of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. It was originally assembled by the Rev. William Robert Hay and later in the possession of J.T. Smith, of Rochdale, from whom they were later acquired by A.P. Wadsworth.
