Late eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century full gold-tooled red straight-grained goatskin over wooden boards; ornate border of a frame of intersecting rolls containing a stem with curling vine roll in the sides and wreath and annulet tools in the corners; centre panel with border of double fillets with curled sides and curved corners containing circular floral tools; 2nd Earl Spencer's coat of arms with crest, motto, supporters and coronet gilt-stamped (Spencer stamp 01 in British Armorial Bindings database). Binder's blue and gilt ticket on verso of first front fly-leaf: 'Bound by C. Kalthoeber London' [i.e. Christian Samuel Kalthoeber (active 1780-1817)].
