Description:
View of the Lancashire Independent College, Manchester. The college is a sandstone ashlar building in the Gothic style. The central entrance block forms an eye-catching feature with set-back buttresses (finished as pinnacles) and steps up to a moulded Tudor-arched doorway. Above the doorway is a full-height two storey oriel window separated by panelling with a clock-face. A large expanse of lawn punctuated with trees sits in front of the building. Built between 1840-43, by Irwin and Chester, the College was established for the training of Non-Conformist ministers, who were excluded from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge until 1871. The college pre-dates Owens College (1851) with which it jointly established the Victoria University of Manchester in 1880.
