Description:
Interior view of the ornately carved fireplace in the drawing room at Rawdon House, Hertfordshire. The fireplace is decorated with two grotesque terminal figures (human top half, columnar bottom) of a satyr and a nymph. The elaborate overmantel has three carved columns decorated with putti (cherubs) and intricate scrollwork. These frame two large and deeply carved scenes of satyrs playing musical instruments. The overmantel is crowned by an intricate frieze that runs the length of the drawing room wall, featuring animals, figures and grotesques. The plaster ceiling has a busy decorative strapwork design. The walls are papered with wooden dado panelling. Occasional tables situated on either side of the fireplace display paintings and photographs. Rawdon House originally dates from the mid-17th century, but was extended and restored by Ernest George and Peto in 1879. In 1898 it became St Monica's Priory, a convent of Augustinian canonesses, a use that lasted until 1969; it has since been converted for use as offices. According to the Bedford Lemere notes, the image was taken for H. K. Ricardo. Since 1910, this fireplace has served as the chimneypiece in the library at Rothamsted Manor House also in Hertfordshire.
