Description:
Interior view of the fireplace in the dining room of Stocken Hall, Stretton, Rutland. The dining room is fully panelled in wood and the fireplace has extensive carving on both the surround and overmantel. The overmantel incorporates a mirror above the fire and a wall lamp on either side of the fireplace, a good deal of pottery is on display on the mantel. There is a deer head mounted on either side of the fireplace. Extra dining chairs are lined up against the walls. The image was taken for Lord Francis Cecil. Stocken Hall dates from the first half of the 17th century and was probably built by John Brown. The house was twice greatly altered and enlarged, on the first occasion about 1774, and again in 1877. After the death of Lord Francis in 1889, his widow married Admiral Tillard, who occupied the house until 1907, when it was bought by Major Charles Hesketh Fleetwood-Hesketh, D.L. The Hall was used as a prison farm from the 1950s until the 1980s and is now converted into apartments. There are some flaws in the print itself, likely sustained in the printing process rather than a flaw to the original plate or negative.
