Description:
Interior view of the inner hall at Stafford House, later named Lancaster House, London. Showing the grand hall and principal staircase. The hall and staircase is a mix of Neo-classical features and Rococo grandeur. The composite columns and walls are decorated with scagliola, a composite type of paste containing mineral fragments that resembles marble. There are paintings inlaid on the walls and an elaborate Rococo balustrade. The photograph was taken as part of a set to show the interior designed by architect Benjamin Dean Wyatt. The house which was initially called, York house and later Stafford House was renamed as Lancaster house in 1912 when it was purchased by Sir William Lever, who renamed it in honour of his native county of Lancashire and presented it to the nation in the following year. Since 1922 the building has housed the Government Wine Cellar. From 1924 until shortly after World War II, the house was the home of the London Museum, but it is now used for government receptions and is closed to the public except on rare open days.
