Albumen print of an ancient house in Eastgate Street, Chester. Three storey building, part of a row. The ground floor is two sections of top to bottom glass fronted with a door between them. Shelves of goods on are display. The proprietor’s name, J. Barber, is displayed in large letters above the shop front. Signs either side say 'Glass, China and Earthenware Merchant'. The first floor has a covered walkway with a shop, not visible, behind. At the front is a railing with goods draped over it. The sign above says 'T. Ellis. Bookbinder, Stationer & Paper Ruler'. The second floor is fronted by leaded windows. The roof is gabled with a chimney stack with three pots. On the right of this building is an adjoining stone staircase leading to the walkways with a stone above it carved with a business name. The staircase adjoins on its right to another building, partially seen. It is higher than the main building pictures so may be more than three storeys. It also has a walkway on the first floor with iron railing in front. Business names can only partially be seen. To the left of the main building is another very similar to it. A pavement then cobbled street are in front of the buildings. The main building is known to have been taken down not long after the photograph was taken.
