Head and shoulders portrait of John Rylands. No positive identification of which John Rylands this may be - is most likely John Rylands Junior, 1815-1898, of Warrington. He has dark hair and mutton chop sideburns. John wears a dark coat, a white, winged collar shirt, and bowed necktie. The image is taken three-quarters to the left and he is looking in that direction. The photograph is framed in an oval gilt mat and housed in an folding unmarked maroon leather folding case with a functional metal latch closure. The case is lined with purple plush velvet.
