Michael Polyani, 1891-1976; A photo of Polyani with Dr A.G. Evans (also of the Chemistry Department) stood besides him watching an unidentified figure perform an experiment demonstrating the formation of plastics. Michael Polyani was Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Manchester 1933-1948, and Professor of Social Studies 1948-1958. On the reverse of the picture, there is an attached label which reads 'The University of Manchester, Professor Polyani demonstrating on the formation of plastics in the department of physical chemistry'. Written directly onto the back of the print is 'This side certainly Dr A G Evans subsequently Professor at Cardiff, Nov 1944'.
