Description:
Temple Street; taken from the roof of the Sackville Street building looking south over the railway viaduct and along the length of Temple Street. In the foreground on Granby row can be seen the rooftops and a large chimney of a factory building standing where Chandos Hall is located today. Beyond the railway line are industrial buildings lining both sides of Temple Street all of which were subsequently cleared to make way for the southern expansion of the UMIST campus. The crossroads with Jackson street can be seen with the Jackson street mill visible rising above the Temple Street buildings this was subsequently refurbished to house the Chemical Engineering dept. Further south from this is a mixture of terraced houses and factory buildings which were demolished to accommodate the construction of the Mancunian Way. The buildings which today occupy the site shown in the picture besides those already mentioned are Staff House, The Barnes Wallace and Pariser buildings and the Ferranti building.
