The interior of a workshop in the old Manchester Mechanics Institute on Princess Street (Formerly David street); The shot is angled across two long wooden topped work benches with vices attached to their front edges. Laid out on the surfaces of both of these are various tools and at their rear there is a series of narrow conical metal structures linked to pipe work that runs along the back of the tables and then up towards the ceiling. Behind the benches there is a jumble of machinery and wheels linked by drive belts to shafts on the ceiling it was by this mechanism that power was transmitted from the generators to the various mechanically driven devices in the chamber. There are two doors in the back wall and against the other visible wall in the picture there seems to be a shelf or a further bench (The picture quality is insufficient for it to be clearly seen). The old Manchester mechanics building still stands on the corner of Princess Street and Major Street.
