Old Manchester Mechanics Institute exterior. Taken at ground level from the western side of what is now Princess Street but was at the time David Street angled south east towards the corner of Major Street and David Street showing the building with various signs and posters on the walls. The Mechanics Institute was resident here until the end of the nineteenth century and the building has since then among other occupants housed the Museum of Labour History before its move to the Pump House and the Labour History Archive. On the back of the image is written the date “October 1885”
