John Stopford, Baron Stopford of Fallowfield, 1887-1961; portrait photo of John Sebastian Bach Stopford, Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester 1934-1956. After graduating from the University of Manchester's Medical School in 1911 Stopford took a position as a demonstrator of anatomy at the same institution the following year. He next became a lecturer in 1915 and then in 1919 became Professor of Anatomy remaining in that post until 1937. Stopford was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University in 1934 in succession to Walter Moberly. He was appointed Professor of Experimental Neurology in 1937. Stopford played a key role in the expansion of the University in the immediate post-war years.
