Description:
Letter from Lady Dartrey to Mary Hamilton. She writes that she arrived safely in Chelsea on Saturday and found her daughter well. She asks Hamilton not to laugh but she notes of her distress when she was at a common some miles from 'Ukfield' [Uckfield] and from anywhere you could get a postillion she was stopped by a 'poor miserable Thoma[s]'. The first postillion had almost fallen off his horse as he was conducting them whilst drunk, 'Monet', the second postillion was left to guard them and they did not know what to do until Moynet conducted them to safety and led the saddle horse as well amidst the laughs of the town of Uckfield they arrived with the first postillion looking like the 'most laughable figure'. Dartrey continues that Thomas 'must at last be turned away'. She ends her letter by asking Hamilton to tell Princess Elizabeth how often she thinks of her and Princess Sophia.

Dated at Chelsea.
