Description:
Autograph manuscript of a play with the title 'Die Emancipirung der Juden in Rumänien oder eine Unglückliche Liebe; Ein Trauerspiel in 5 Aufzugen (The Emancipation of the Jews in Romania, or An Unhappy Love; a tragedy in 5 acts) by M.M. Ojserkis, dated 1886. It is a slim volume bound in a pink cover, containing 166 pages, the page numbering starts on page 3. After the title page, there is a page addressed to 'his very reverend mister doctor M. Gaster' (in which the author apologises for dedicating his 'artless' work to Gaster), which is followed by the preface (p. 3), a list of the characters in the play (p. 7) and the play itself (pp. 8-166). The letter which accompanied this gift by Ojserkis to Gaster, written in Podhajce on 3 October 1888, has been bound in at the end of the volume. The play is set in Bucharest and deals with the expulsion of Jewish intellectuals from Romania in 1885. Moses Gaster and Elias Schwarzfeld (1855–1915) feature as characters in the play. The lead characters are Prime Minister Ion Brătianu (1821–1891) and his wife Mariana. The play ends with Dr. Gaster saying 'adieu' to Romania.
