Description:
Manuscript of the fourth ]uz' of the Qur'an. A continuous fragment extending from verse 86 of the third Sūrah to verse 27 of the fourth Sūrah. There are five lines to the page and it is written in large letters of gold in a Maghribi or African hand, midway between Kufi and Naskhi. Gold ornaments mark the sectional divisions. Bound in the last century, but having apparently the sides of an earlier binding inlet, preserved almost intact. The words on the ornaments that mark the division of sections are in a kind of Maghribi-Kūfi letters. The diacritical points in gold are by the scribe, but the vowels and other punctuation are added by a later hand in blue ink. Possibly of a Hispano-Mauresque origin. It may be ascribed to about A.D. 1000.
