Description:
Fall of Princes. Book eight: eventually Valens was defeated by the Goths and he met his end hiding in a cottage which the Goth's burned to the ground. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'A' introduces the stories of Hermanric, Gratian and Theodosius. Gratian and Theodosius were brothers who ruled the Roman empire together. Maximus who was ambitious to be ruler of the empire himself returned from Britain to fight the brothers, managing to kill Gratian. The ink annotation in the margin '(d)vii' corresponds to pages in the Pyson printed edition of Fall of Princes. Small illuminated and coloured initials introduce the verses. The written space is 285 x 200 mm in two columns and the script is rather an ugly and unstable anglicana formata.
