ful sory in herte: and þought rathere he wolde him self suf- fre pitouse deth: and thought ȝif he mighte ordeigne þ(er)fore som man(er)e remedie // And anon þe monk wente to his Abbot and was shryuen of him. and tolde þe Abbot al þ(t) þe king sayde and p(ra)yede his Abbot for to assoile him for he wolde ȝeue þe king suche a whatsaile þat al Engelond shulde ben glad þ(er) of and ioyeful // þo wente þe monk in to a Gardyn. and fond a grete tode þ(er)in & nome hire vp & pulte hire in a cuppe and prikkede þe tode þorugh with a broche manye times til þ(t) þe venyme come out in eu(er)yche syde in to þe cuppe and þo nome þe coppe and felde hit w(t) good ale and broughte it bifore þe king and knelynge say- de. Sire q(uod) he whatsaile for neuere daies of ȝoure lyf ne dronke ȝe of such a coppe // Bygynne monk q(uod) þe king and þe monk drank a gret drauthe and toke þe king þe coppe and þe king also drank a gret draugthe and sette doun þe coppe // þe monk anon right wente in to þe fermerye & þere deide anon: on whos soule god haue mercy: Amen. and .v. monkes singeth for his soule specialliche and shul leth whil þat þe Abbay stant// þe king aros vp anon ful euele at ese and co(~)maundede to remeue þe table and axede after þe monk: and men tolde him þat he was ded for his wombe was broke a sunder // whanne þe king herde þis tydinge he comaundede for to trusse but al it was for nought for his bely bigan so to swelle for þe drinke þ(t) he dranke þat he deide wiþinne .ij. dayes þe morwe after sent lukes day // And þis king Joh(a)n hadde faire children of his body geten þat is to seyn Henry. his sone þat was king after his fader. and Richard þat was Erl of Corne- waile and Isabelle þat was þe Emp(er)ice of Rome and Aly- anore þat was Quene of Scotland // And þis king Joh(a)n whanne he had regned .xvij. ȝere .v. mounþes and .v. daies he deide in þe castel of Newerk and his body was buried at Wynchestr(e) Of king Henry þe þridde þat was
