Description:
The word 'John' is written in the top margin of the folio. There is a catchword 'the masse' in the bottom margin. The tale of the letter King John writes to the court of Rome, paying homage to the Pope and surrendering to his authority and demands. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'W' introduce the tale of how King John welcomes back the clerks he outlawed from England, and how King John is absolved of his sins. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

And alle þese þinges þat bifore ben sayde we wile þat it be ferme and stable w(t)outen ende and to þat obligacioun(~) we and alle oure successours and oure heires in pi(s) manere beþ bounde þa yf we or onye of oure heirs þorugh ony presumpcioun falle in eny poynt aȝens þese þinges aboue say- de and he be warned and wile nouȝt right amende him: he shal þanne lese þe forsaide reaumes. for eu(er)more. and þ(t) þis chartre of obligaciou(~) and oure waraunt for eu(er)more be ferme and stable w(t)outen gayn saynge: we shulle fro þis day aftir warde be trewe to god and to þe moder chirche of Rome and to þe pope Innocent þe þridde: and to alle þ(t) cometh aftir him and þe reaumes of Engelond and of .Jrlande. we shul- len mayntene trewely in alle manere pointeȝ aȝens alle manere men by oure poere þorugh godes helpe. How þe clerkes þat wer(e) outlawede of Engelond come aȝene and how [...] king Joh(a)n was assoiled C(o) C(mo). lij(do).
