castel so þat þe castel was taken or þ(t) he deide: and so manleche his men deden þat þe peple þat were in þe cas- tel were alle taken and þe king dede wiþ ham what þat he wolde and com(~)aundede his men þat þey shulde brynge byfore him þe man þat him so hurte. and so woundede // And whanne he come bifore þe king. þe king axede what was his name: and he saide sire. my name is Bertram Gur- dou(~): wherfore saide þe king hast þow me slayn: sith þat y dede þe neu(er)e non harme // Sire seide he þough ȝe dede me neu(er)e harme ȝe haue don to my frendes muche harme for ȝoure self wiþ ȝoure hande quelde my fader and my broþ(er) and þ(er)fore now J haue quyt ȝoure trauayle // þo saide king Richard: he þat deide vppon þe crois to brynge mannes soule f(ro)m pyne of helle forȝeue ȝow my deth: and J also forȝeue it þe: þo comaunded þe king þ(t) no man shulde him mysdone: but for al þe kinges defendinge some of his men him folwede and p(ri)uely him quelde and þe .vj(e). day after þe king deyde shrifte and sore repentaunce hauynge of his mysdedes and was houseled and anoyn- tede: and þis king ne regnede but .ix. ȝere. and xxxix. wo- kes and deide and lith bisides his fad(er) at ffount eu(er)ard Of king Joh(a)n þat in þe ferste ȝere of his regne lost al [...] Normandye.
