þe toun and þ(er)e helde ham // whanne king Alured herde þe tidinge: anon he lete take þe hostages and wente fram þenne(s) to Excestr(e) wiþ al þe poer þat he had // And whanne þe Da- noys herd telle of his comynge þey wente fro þennes forþ in to Westsex and comen to Chippenh(a)m and þ(er)e þey deden muche harme in þe cuntre. þey robled folc and brought ham in pri- soun // þe king Alured ham pursuede and come vppon ham and fersleche ham assailede and þ(er)e wer slayne boþ(e). Hubba and Hunguar his broþ(er) and Buerne bocard. and in þis batai- le was muche folc slayn. in o p(ar)tye and in þ(t) oþ(er). but þe gree of þe feld lefte w(t) þe danoys: for as moche as þe king þo come but litel compaignye // þe king hastede him as muche as he myghte for to wende aȝen. And whanne þe danoys foun- den Hubba. his body ligginge ded. þey enterede it and made vppon him a gret logge .and lete calle it. Hubbeslowe and so it is called in to þis day and þat place is in Deuenesshire. // þe barouns of Som(er)sete. Wiltesshire and. Dorsete. herde tolle how þat þe king was descomfited and ordeynede al þ(e) poer þat þey mighte haue and comen to þe king þere þat he was and þankede god þat þey had him founde alyue for þey wente þat þe danoys had him slayn // þo nome þey a counceil þe king and his barou(~)s þat þey wolde gon to seche þe danoys w(t) ham al for to fighten and so þey riden al þat nyght ham al for to seche and comen a morwe aboute p(ri)me to Abyngdou(~) þere þat þe danoys were // þe king þo Alured and his barou(~)s assemblede and þ(er)e assailede þe Danoys egreliche and þere ȝaue ham a st(ro)ng bataile þan eu(er)e he dede bifor(e) and þ(e) Danoys nobly pulte ha(~) of lo(~)g time þ(t) no ma(~) wist i(~) wheþer p(ar)tie more pe- ple was slayn // But þus it bifel as god wolde þat þ(e) king alured had þe victorie w(t) muchel hono(ur) for þe danoys were so dryuen. þat þey ne wiste whider for to turne. and .xv. day es þe king ham p(ur)suede at his wille þat glad and fayn þey were for to speken of pees and of accorde and token him goo de hostages and sayde þat þey nolde neu(er)more vppon him
