Description:
How the bishops preach throughout England. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'W' introduce the tale of how Saint Austyn (Austin) goes into Wales, but how the Christians there will not be obiedient to the English bishops. A catchword 'at Leycestr' appears at the bottom right of the folio. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

Mellit. and he duelled at Londou(~). and þat oþ(er) me callede Justyn þat helde þe dignite of Rouchestr //And þis bisshop Mellite þo wente to p(re)che in to Essex. and baptiȝede þe king of þe cuntree þat me callede Sicwith. þat was king Adel- brightes cosyn. his suster sone // þis Justyne wente to p(re)che in Southsex and turnede muche of þe peple to god: and sent Austyn wente him self p(re)ching þorugh out Engelond How sent Austyn wente in to Walis þ(er)e þat þe britouns were and how þey nolden nouȝt ben obedient to Erchebiss [oppe of kaunt(er)bery. Capo. xxiiij. xviijo.] Whanne al En- gelond was baptised and turned to god: sen Austyn wente in to þat londe þ(er)e þat þe britou(~)s wer and for to kepe ham fro englisshe men þat is to seyn in to Walis and þere he fond monk(es) and abbeys and .vij. bisshoppes for þe Britou(~)s destroyede alwey þe cristene peple þat sent Austyn had conu(er)ted and saide to þe bissoppes þat he was a legat of Rome and p(ri)mat of al Engelond and þat þey shulde by al resou(~) to him be obedient and þey saide þat þey. nolde but to þe Ersshebisshopp of karlyoun(~) and saide þe nolde ne- uere for no man(er)e þing ben obedient vnto þe Englisshe me(~) ffor þe Englisshe men þey seide beþ oure adu(er)saries and oure enemys and haueþ dryuen vs out of oure owene cuntree & we beþ cristene men and eu(er)e haue ben: and þe englisshe me(~) haueþ eu(er)more be(~) paynymes but now late þat þey ben con- uertede // Sent Austin mighte of ham non oþ(er) ansuere haue but saiden apertly þat þey nolde neu(er)e ham meke to him ne to þe pope of Rome. And sent Austyn tornede þo aȝen to king Adelbright þat was king of kent and tolde him þat his folc nolden nought to noman ben obedient ne to no ma(~): but to þe Erchebisshop of karlioun(~): and whanne þe king herde þis: he was sore annoyed. and saide þat he wolde ham destroye and sente to Elfride king of Northumber- land þat was freend to him þat he shulde come to him wiþ al þe poer þat he mighte and þat he shulde mete him
