Whanne sent Austyn come ferst in to Engelond he arry- uede in þe Jle of Tenet and so passede forth and come vnto kaunt(er)bery and þere soiournede and king Adelbright of kent þat was of þe lynage of Engist faire vndirfenge sent Austyn and his felawes wiþ muchel hono(ur). and ham fonde al þat ham neded and ferþ(er)more he ȝaf ham a fair place þat nowe is called þe Abbey of sent Austines in which place he lith him self shryned // þis king Adelbright was a good ma(~) and wiþ good wille herde sent Austines predi- caciouns and ȝaf him leue to preche þorugh al his londe of kent to turne and to conu(er)te to him al þe peple that he mighte // Jt fel so afterward þorugh goddes grace þ(t) in(~) litel tyme þe king him self was conu(er)ted to god and al his peple of his lande was baptiȝed. And in þe mene tyme while þe peple turnede ham to god : sent Austyn com to Rouchestr and þ(er)e p(re)chede godes word:- þe paynymes þ(er)fore him scornede and caste on him righe tailes and for more despite þey casten vppon him þe guttes of righe and of fissh wherfore þe goode man sent Austyn was sore annoyed & greued and prayede to god þat alle þe children þat shulde ben born afterward in þat citee of Rouchestr moste haue tailes // And whanne þe king herde and wiste of þis ven- geaunce þat was falle þorugh sent Austynes prayer: he lete make an hous in hono(ur) of god where in wymmen shulde haue children at þe bruges ende in which hous wymmen ȝit of þe citee beþ delyu(er)ed of childe // Whenne sent Gregory had herd telle how þe englisshe men were turned to god and conu(er)tede: he sente to sent Austyn his pallioun(~) by a Bisshop þat me callede Paulyn and made him p(ri)mat and Erchebisshop of al Engelond and/sente worde þat he þanne shulde ordeigne and make bisshopes in þe lande and anon as sent Austyn hadde þ(e) pallioun(~) of þe dignite of þe Erchebisshop he made .ij. bisshopes of his felawes þat comen wiþ him fram rome. on þat me callede
