me mighte ȝeuen to þe messag(er)s and þey counceilede him at ones þat he shulde assemble a gret poer of alle þe landes of þe whiche he hadde lordship and manliche auenge him vppon þ(e) Emp(er)our of þe despite þat he had sent to him suche a lettre. & þey sworen by god and by his names þat þey shulde him pur- sue and brenne in as muchel as þey mighte and saide þat þey nolde neu(er)e faile king Arthur. and rathere to ben ded and þey let writen a l(et)re to sende to þe Emp(er)o(ur) by þe same mes- sangers in þis manere. Of þe bolde ansuere þat king Ar thur sente to þe Emp(er)our of Rome and to þe Romayns Co. xxiiij.p(ri)mo Understondeth amonges ȝow of Rome þat .J. am king Arthur of Britaigne and frely it holde and shal holde and at Rome hastily J shal be nowȝt to ȝeue ȝow truage but for to axen truage for Constantin þat was Eleyn(s) sone þat. was Emp(er)o(ur) of Rome and of al þe hono(ur) þat þ(er)to bilongeþ ffor Maximian king of ff(ra)unce conquerede al Britaigne con querede al ffraunce and Almaigne. and mount Joye passede and conquerede al lumbardie. and þese too were myne aun- cestres and þat þey had and helde J shal haue þorugh god(es) wille.
