Description:
Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'T' introduce the tale of how King Arthur receives a message from the emperor of Rome demanding that he yield his power. There is a catchword 'me mighte' at the bottom of the folio. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

Arthur hadde halde biforne but neu(er)e non suche ne so solemp ne and þat laste .xv. dayes wiþ muchel honour and merthe Of a lettre þat was sente fram þe Citee of Rome fo pride to king Arthur. Capitulo .xx iiij. The þridde day as king Arthure sate at his mete amonges his kinges and amon- ges ham þat seten at þe feste biforne ham come(~) in .xij. elderne men of age richely arrayede and curteisly saluede þe king & saide þey comen fram Rome sente messag(er)s fram þe Emp(er)o(ur) and toke him a l(et)re þat þus muche was to vnderstande // Gretly vs m(er)uailleþ Arthur þat þow art ones so hardy wiþ eyen in þin heuede: to maken open werre and contak aȝens vs of Rome : þat owen al þe worlde to deme: for þow hast neuere ȝit bifore þis time time p(ro)ued ne assaied þe strengthe of þe Romayns and þ(er)fore þow it shalt in a litel time ffor. Ju- lius Cesar conquerede al þe lande of Britaigne and tooke þ(er)of truage and oure folc long time haue it had and now þorugh þi pride þow wiþholdest it Wherfore we com(~)aunde þe þat þow it ȝelde aȝen. and ȝet hast þow more folie done þat þou hast slayn ffrolle þat was oure Baroun(~) of ff(ra)unce al wiþ wronge. and þerfore alle þe com(~)unes of Rome war nen and com(~)aunden þe vppon lif and lyme þat þow in haste be at Rome amendes to make of þy misdedes þat þ(u) hast done. and ȝif it so be þat þow come nouȝt we shulle passe þe hulle of Joye wiþ strengthe and we shullen þe se- ke where eu(er)e þow might ben founde. and þow shalt nought haue a foote of londe of þin owene þat we ne shal destroye and aftirward wiþ þy body we shulleþ done oure wille. Whanne þis lettre was rad and alle men it herde: þey wer annoyede alle þat were at þat solempnyte. and þe britouns wolde haue slayn þe messag(er)s. but Arthur wolde nought soffren it. and saide þat þe messag(er)s shulden haue non harme: and mowe by resoun non deserue. but he co(~)maun- dede ham to ben worshipfully seruede and after mete he nome counceil of kinges.
