poer and bigonne to werre oppon þe king How king Vter ches Aloth to kepe þe lande of Britaigne whiles þat he was sike for as muche as he mighte nought for his siknesse . C(o). lxxij(o). And for as muche as king Vter was sike and mighte nought helpe him self. he ordeignede Aloth sone of Eleyne þat þo was to ben wardeyn and chyueteyn of all his folc and he anon and his britou(~)s assembled a gret ost and ȝaf bataile to Otta and to his folc but Otta at þe laste was descomfited // Hit bifel þus aft(er)ward þat þis britou(~)s had dedignaciou(~) of Aloth : and wolde nouȝt to him ben en tendaunt wherfore þe king was annoyed wonder sore & lete pulte him in a litere in þe host among his folc and þey had him to Veroleyne þat þo was a fair citee þere þ(t) sent Albon was martred and aft(er) was þat citee destroied þorugh paynymis and þorugh werre and þider þey had sent Ossa and Otta and hire peple and entrede in to þe toun and lete make faste þe ȝates and þere þey helde ham and þe king come and ham bisegede and makede a st(ro)ng assaute but þo þat were wiþinne manleche ham defende de // þe king lete ordeigne his gonnes and his engynes for to breke þe wall : and þe wall were so st(ro)nge. þat noþing mighte ham misdo // Otta and his peple had gret despite þat a king liggynge in a liter had ham biseged and þey token counceil amonges ham for to stonde vp in þe morwe and come out and ȝeue bataile to þe king and so þey de- den. and in þat bataile were boþe Otta and Ossa slayn. and alle þo oþ(er)e þat ascapede alyf fledden in to Scotlande and maden Colegryn hire chiueteyn and þe Saxsones þ(t) weren alif and ascapede fro þe bataile broughten aȝen a gret strengthe and among(es) ham þei seiden þat ȝif þe king Vter. were ded þey shulde wel conquere þ(e) lande and amo(~)g(es) ham þey þouȝte empoysone þe king and ordeined men for to do þis dede and ȝaf ham of ȝiftes gret plente þis þing to done and þey ordeignede ham þiderward þere þat þe
