Description: 
The word 'John' is written in the top margin of the folio. The word 'but' is written in the right margin. The tale of how Louis takes many castles in England. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'A' introduce the tale of how King John takes refuge in a Swyneshede (Swineshead) abbey. Line 28 'but' has been inserted by a later hand. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

þat were þ(er)inne and þe þorisday þo next sewynge he com to londou(~) and þ(er)e he was vndirfonge with muchil honour of þe lordes þat abiden him þere and alle to him þey maden homa- ge // And aftirward in þe Tywesday next after þe Trinite sonday he toke þe castel of Reygate. and in þe morwe after þe castel of Gildeford. and þe friday next aftir þe castel of ffarnch(a)m. and þe moneday next after þe citee of Wyn- chestr(e) to him was ȝolde. and in þ(e) morwe aftir sent John(as)es day þe maner of Wolueseye. and þe tywesday next after þ(e) viij. of sent Pet(er) and sent Paule. þey token þe castel of Ody ham // And þe moneday next after sent Margarete day. he ordeignede him toward Beaumer for to bisege þe castelle and þ(er)e he duellede .xv. dayes. and mighte nouȝt gete þe castel. and þo wente he þennes and come to londou(~). and þe Tour. to him was ȝolde. And in þe same time þe po- pe sente in to Engelonde a legat þ(t) me(~) called Swalo and [...] of king Johnes deþ And in þe same time þe pope sente [...] in to Engelond a legat þat men callede Swalo. and he was prest Cardinal of Rome. for to maigntene king Jo- nes cause aȝens þe Barouns of Engelonde: but þ(e) barouns had so huge party and helpe þorugh lowys þe kinges sone of ff(ra)unce þat king Joh(a)n wiste nouȝt whider for to turne ne gon // And so it fell þat he wolde haue gon to Nichole: and as he wente þiderward he com by þe Abbay of Swy- nesheuede and þ(er)e he abode .ij. dayes // And as he sat at þ(e) mete he axede a monk of þe hous how muche a lof was worth þat was sette bifore him vppon þe table: and þe monk saide þat þe lof was worth [but] an halpenye.
