Description: 
The word 'John' is written in the top margin of the folio. The tale of how King John seizes the property of the church, and how the archbishops then request that he give it back, and accept Stephen as Archbishop of Canterbury. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'W' introduce the tale of how Stephen the Archbishop arrives in England. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

but for no praier þat þey myghte p(ra)ye. he wolde nouȝt consen te þer to: and whanne þe Bisshoppes sawe þis: þey wente f(ra)m þe king: and in þe morne after þe Annunciaciou(~) of oure lady. þey p(ro)nouncede þe gen(er)al enterditinge þorugh out al Engelond: so þat þe chirche dores were shitte wiþ kayes and with oþ(er)e fast- nyng(es) and with walles // And whan þe entirdyting was pro nounced: þanne þe king biganne for to wexe al out of mesure and nome in to his hande alle þe possessiouns of þe .iiij. bissh oppes and of al þe clergie þorugh al þe lande and ordeignede men for to kepe it þat þe clerkes mighte nouȝt haue hire le- uynge wherfore þe bisshoppes cursede alle ham þat pulto or sholde medele with holy chirche goodes aȝens þe wille of ham þat ham owede // And whanne þe king wolde nouȝt cesse of his malyce for no manere þing: þe .iiij. bisshoppes aboue saide wente ouer þe see and wente to þe Bisshop of Kaunt(er)bery and tolde him al þe doynge // And þe Erchebisshop to ham saide þ(t) þey shulde gon aȝen to Kaunt(er)bery and he wolde come þider to ham: or elles he wolde sende þider certeyne p(er)sones in his stede þat shulde done as muche as him self were þere // And whan þe Bisshoppes herde þis: þey turnede aȝen vnto Engelonde & comen in to Kaunt(er)bery // þe tydinge come to þe king þat þe bisshoppes were comen aȝen to Kaunterbery and him self myȝte nouȝt come þider þat tyme. he sente þider Bisshoppes Erles Abbotes for to trete with ham þat þe king shulde vnderfonge þe Erchebisshop.
