Description:
Sussex. Coloured map with latitude and longitude marked around the edge. The map is very rich in detail including cities, place names, rivers and mountains. Castles, mountains and significant buildings are illustrated by drawings. Boundaries are denoted by coloured lines. Top left is a large ornate cartouche containing the title and the words: 'By Eman Bowen, Geogr. to his Majesty'. This is decorated with figures carrying out surveying work. Around the map are paragraphs giving statistical and historical data about the area and the various seats of nobility. Centre top is a map of Chichester with a lettered key to significant features. In the top right corner another ornate cartouche contains the dedication: 'To his Grace Algernon Duke of Somerset, Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum & Lord Lieutenant of the County of Sussex, This map is humbly dedicated by His Grace's most obedt. & most devoted servt. Eman Bowen'. Lower right is a compass rose and a scale bar showing: 'British Statute Miles 69 to a Degree'. Bottom right is a large sketch of the South prospect of Lewes. Bottom centre is an 'Explanation' of the symbols used. Bottom right is a large sketch of the North prospect of Chichester. Printed along the bottom is: 'London. Printed for Robt. Sayers, in Fleet Street, John Bowles in Cornhill, & Carrington Bowles in St Pauls Church Yard.'
