Description:
Stafford. Coloured map with latitude and longitude marked around the edge. The map is very rich in detail including cities, place names, rivers and mountains. Castles, mountains and significant buildings are illustrated by drawings. Boundaries are denoted by coloured lines. Top left is a large ornate cartouche containing the title and the words: 'By Eman Bowen, Geogr. to his Majesty'. This is decorated with figures by a stream. Around the map are paragraphs giving statistical and historical data about the area and the various seats of nobility. One claims Stafford as the healthiest part of the country, suggesting they have three christenings to each burial. In the top right corner another ornate cartouche contains the dedication: 'To the Noble and Right Honorable John Gower, Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum & Lord Lieutenant of the County of Stafford, and Keeper of His Majesty's Privy Seal. This map is dedicated by His Lordship's most humble servt. Eman Bowen'. Bottom left is an 'Explanation' of the symbols used. Bottom right is a scale bar showing: 'British Statute Miles 69 to a Degree'. Printed along the bottom is: 'London. Printed for R Wilkinson 58 Cornhill, Laurie & Whittle 53 Fleet Street, and Bowles & Carver 69 St Pauls Church Yard'.
