Seventeenth-century Italian [possibly Bologna] full red goatskin fanfare binding over paste boards; tooled in gilt, with lines; a double border roll; a quarter fan in each corner; the centre panel divided into compartments by double fillets; the compartments are filled with fans and interlaced scrolling; crown and coat of arms of the Grand Duke of Tuscay on front and rear boards [probably Cosimo III (1642-1723), son of the dedicatee, who amassed the largest library in Europe]; smooth spine; sewn on six cords, laced in; spine tooled in gilt to match boards; traces of three pairs of ties; gilt-tooled board edges; all edges gilt, gauffered and painted.
