Description:
Autograph letter to Joly announcing that he has finished writing Ruy Blas, and attaches the manuscript to the letter. Hugo also tells that he will arrive on 28th and will be too tired to read the play, so he would like to delay it to the following day. Moreover, he asks Joly not to send the manuscript to Frederick Lemaître, the leading actor, as he wants to do it by himself and avoid any leak. Finally, Hugo briefly mentions that Louis Boulanger is making the costumes for the play. Bought from the Librairie de l'Abbaye on 23 November 1962 for 270 francs. This letter was previously in the collection of Robert Schuman (1886-1963).
