Description:
|
Autograph letter to Buloz, concerning an article which Hugo wants the latter journal to print before or after the Chronique, without personal signature. The article, entitled 'M. Pradier et l'Arc de l'Etoile', was duly published. Pradier was a successful sculptor and also the previous lover of Juliette Drouet, with whom he had a daughter. A footnote to the letter, possibly by Buloz, draws attention to the irony of the situation; the lover of Juliette writing on behalf of her ex-lover, to further Juliette's own interests. Indeed, Pradier told Hugo he would not help Juliette's daughter, unless Hugo used his influence to secure for him a commission for the Arc de Triomphe.
Bought from Privat on 5 March 1965 for 180 francs.
Buloz was the founder in 1829 of the Revue des Deux Mondes, the most famous literary journal of the century in France.
