The Paṭṭhānappakarana is the final volume of the Abhidhamma pitaka of the Theravada Tripitaka. A philosophical treatise of the Buddha’s teaching on causality: it is the world’s largest systematically organised presentation of the Dhamma – the Buddha’s teachings. This book is a detailed examination of causal conditioning, the law of cause and effect, analysing 24 types of conditional relations (paccaya). For example, the complex conditionality of an event of a simple combustion may be explained through the language of the 'aññāmañña-paccaya'- a condition by way of mutuality. The typical conditions present in a combustion are heat, air and fuel. However, despite being the primary proponents of any successful fire, the favourable conditions they collectively foster are described as only a single fragment of the aggregate conditionality. The whole, being comprised of the mutual interrelations between all the elemental conditions, as one is subsumed by some ratio of the others and so on. By this logic, water as a condition still exists, albeit as a disproportionately represented causality. Simply put, the causes for the combustion are also the conditions necessary for its reality. This is only a simple explanation of the nature of a single conditionality out of the 24 which are described in the Patthāna, which in their cumulative communion form the complex networks of conditions which forebear all phenomena, corporeal or otherwise. And so, it is often described as the book of causes. A cause is only one condition that influences the arising of an effect or result (vipāka).
