Description:
|
This 1824 edition of the Bible, published by Cadell & Davies, is a reissue of the 1800 illustrated Bible published by Thomas Macklin. For the new edition, several new headpiece and tailpiece vignettes were designed, and others were adapted. The tailpiece to Romans here is a revised version of the tailpiece to 3 John in the 1800 edition, designed by Philip-Jacques de Loutherbourg and engraved by James Heath. As the tailpiece to 3 John in the 1800 edition, the scroll was blank. Here, the words of Romans 16:22 have been added. The revision is not credited, but it is likely to have been undertaken by John Landseer, who was principal engraver for this edition. The present vignette replaces a larger tailpiece to Romans that appeared in the 1800 edition, which appears as the tailpiece to Philippians in the 1824 edition.
