Description:
Thomas Macklin's Bible was published serially between 1791 and 1800. The full-page plates and headpiece and tailpiece vignettes were published by Macklin, and the text was printed for Macklin by Thomas Bensley. This volume contains the books of Acts to Revelation. The volume includes 9 full-page plates by various artists and engravers, published between 01 March 1794 and 20 October 1800; and 42 headpiece (23) and tailpiece (19) vignettes designed by Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg, by various engravers. Most of the vignettes are not dated - the earliest date is 15 June 1800 (headpiece to Romans) and the latest is 04 December 1800 (headpiece to Jude). The publisher of the tailpiece to Jude is given as "H. Macklin" - i.e. Thomas Macklin's wife, Hannah. All other plates and vignettes are give Thomas as the publisher. The latest vignette bearing Thomas' name is the headpiece to 2 Thessalonians, dated 29 October 1800. Thomas Macklin died on 25 October 1800, shortly before the Bible was completed. Hannah Macklin oversaw the publication of the final vignettes.
